hmmm... linket fungerede ikke lige som planlagt... så istedet bringer jeg et citat (lidt langt...): "cc -*-_THE SEARCH_-*- it's nearly impossible to generate a mass vibe in our times. and it puzzles me so. even sadder is that i cannot even point out a specific place to go to show an example of what a thick nasty vibe is/was like. it's not like it could be captured on video and recreating yesteryear is not an option you might be snubbing this as one of those soap box rants that old skoolers get themselves into. but i am also a late comer who has only seen glimpses of what i am about to pass on, and it seems best IMHO if i try to shed some light on our history - in some hope that it may help the newcomers in their search for the missing vibe. a majority have walked away and consider what we have now (scene wise) as a dead rotting corpse of what was once a beautiful thing. but there are still a few that keep the memory of the fever alive. straight-edgers be forewarned: i will be discussing drugs here simply because it is impossible to have a serious discussion on our history without including them. But have no fear, dancing is also covered, 'cause there really ain't no point in continuing a discussion on rave in this area (nyc) without including dancing. VIBE many of us have very different definitions of what this term means. a general and watered-down definition would be the "sociability" of a party. at some time in our night life we've all heard the stories of parties where this sociability level was so high, that, as the last record spins, the entire party is in unison giving each other high 5's and hugs. i'm writing this to tell you that not only were these stories true but that they were only a small part of a much more interesting picture. our brothers and sisters before us were able to generate such high levels of vibe that the need to communicate with words was transcended. you could communicate entire passages of ideas through dance, through hi-fives, through hugs - you could actually feel an invisible warmth of energy pass from one person to another just by acknowledging a wink with a smile. and you could give a solid answer to the question: at what point does empathy cross the line and turn into telepathy? you may wonder why it was so easy for our older brothers and sisters to amass such global energy. in all honesty, their tools were much better. many of you don't know this but there was once a time when there was only one kind of pill instead of the diverse selection of batches we have today. it was a small, pharmaceutically made, white nondescript, aspirin-sized tab with a halving slash on one side, and it was simply called "e." what we have today could in no way ever match the purity or potency of the past. there are countless accountable stories of one being halved or quartered to share amongst friends because of it's strength, or one (not five or six) that would last from friday to monday. it's a shame that something that could help unlock positive human potential and bring the world closer together was so quickly rushed into schedule one drug status. even though this happened much earlier than the start of the movement. the wheels were set into motion to take down a very powerful tool that aided our evolution. from the financial contributions of alcohol and tobacco industries into government anti-drug funds, to acceptance or rather the absorption of certain drugs into the scene by ravers too eager to take rather than share. it is no wonder that vibe is almost on extinct creature. [ Kyle B. (D.U.B, PLUR Prod.) ] "...Ketamine, a disgusting drug pushed onto the rave scene by government agencies allowing it to slip out of pharmaceutical stockpiles, destroyed the community's connection to one another one sniff at a time. Ketamine by design is a disassociative, which means it disassociates the mind from the body, making it great for anesthesia but horrible for dancing. The formula for meditation through movement was a delicate balance between the mind, body and the soul, all of which were thrown off by K. And K turned into an epidemic overnight, it was cheap, hard-hitting and easy to come by, and it ruined the scene. All of a sudden people were so out of it that it was no problem for thugs to steal somebody's stuff, they couldn't even say their own names nevertheless hold their own. They no longer added something back to the scene, they just took things away from it because they were locked inside themselves, stuck there. That's where the faceless control agencies of this country succeeded. In the late 60s they pushed coke to get people paranoid and selfish and away from the community, then in the 90s did it with K to the same end. It's funny how history repeats itself...." Even with the aid of the strongest of the rave warriors, the damage could not be reversed. [ Mookie (D.U.B) ] "....Believe me when I say that plenty of heads tried to stop what was going on. I think that I know a lot of heads that poured heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, nuts, bolts anything that wasn't bolted down into the Rave Abyss trying to change the direction that things were taking from early on. But: A. few listened B. even fewer cared. A lot of heads warned against the acceptance or rather the absorption of certain drugs into the scene; the mass consumption of illicit combos that would even put elephants down for weekends. We even tried to band kids together against the BTS Threat and the Shady Promoters. What did any of us get out of running around every party putting out fires, saving kids from getting their assess kicked, getting stolen shit returned, getting bunk replaced with good shit, getting our asses kicked for people that only cared about getting fucked up? Nothing. Maybe some excuses, Maybe..." i don't know if those days could be recaptured again. and the challenge we are left with is unfair to say the least. The problem is two-fold. 1. the quality of e today encourages binging and it's getting even worse - the precursors to manufacture the real deal are virtually untouchable - leaving the renegade chemists to find sub-standard substitutes. but that hasn't stopped the attraction of the young public eye looking to join in the love. i won't go deeper about differences of pills now and then but let's just say that without the proper tools to unlock and share the energy among us - the uninitiated resort back to ideas brought in from the outside that clearly clash with the ones that started this whole craze..... 2. a majority of us do not know or have forgotten what the original reasons were that started our movement. the original reason that our older brothers and sisters began seeking out warehouses was to get away from the velvet rope, to get away from the idiots who wouldn't let us play our music, who laughed at the clothes that we wore, who laughed at the way that we danced, to get away from the meat market that was the night life back then. to find acceptance in a world where there was none. today, there is little guidance for the newcomers (there was never a need for it - the tools took care of uncovering what was hidden beneath the surface) but with the crap that has been substituted - the effects wear off too quickly, if they're even reached at all, and we all too quickly resort back to being insecure and keeping our energy to ourselves. what little chance to generate vibe, to generate new moves, to generate more energy is inevitably crushed. this was not the case in the beginning... [ Kyle B. (D.U.B, PLUR Prod.) ] "... Now as I hope we all know, the rave scene was built on LSD. The introspection and sensitivity to light and sound that LSD created in a dark room with flashing lights and pumping sound was a breeding ground for progressive dance and community. It was very much like the experimentation of the 1960s except that the technology had advanced so far that illusions within sound and scenes became much more powerful. So did the dancing that came with it…" there isn't much we could do about the first part of the problem (not that I know of, anyway.) but there is something we can do about the second. DANCING [ xxSAGExx (Brainstorm Comm.) ] "...to me there is no better way to make people feel unwelcome than to make them feel uncomfortable about the way they are dancing. it kills the vibe and a lot of the originality, and to me what was once the most beautiful thing about this whole scene is that it was accepting of everyone, no matter how they danced..." [Kyle B. (D.U.B, PLUR Prod.) ] "…Dancing on LSD to music that commands motion created the notion that dancing was a spiritual event controlled by a higher power. Not to mention the introduction of MDMA (ecstacy) which heightens the emotion and causes the user to search for connections in the word around them. These connections were on an emotional level that was effected by the physical world with immediacy, thereby causing people to believe that the world around them was changing when it really was themselves changing. What I think was changing individually as well as collectively was the belief that music and dance were more than recreation, that they were actually expressions of the soul in the deepest sense of spirituality. That trend continued as more and more people began to enter the community and believe. The music, scene, stimulants and underground prophets recruited millions of believers worldwide and opened the doors to new forms of music and dance that all melted together on the dancefloor. Certain rhythms brought out certain aspects of movement and dance, once each person found the right beat they were hooked. They were hooked on the feeling, of being in touch with more than the world around them, of being in touch with the world that new musical landscapes created within their own minds. And with the help of candyflipping they were able to interact, not just watch, the world that their mind's eye can see…." there are many among us that have taken their gift of energy and focused it into dancing. with or without enhancements, most of us have given our time and attention on how we move our bodies to our music. we've taken the time to understand that our music can pull moves out of us and we are overjoyed when we see it pulling moves out of our brothers and sisters. then there are those that have yet to understand. those who still harbor the feelings that this is about a competition, some sort of "better than you" type of deal. they still can't grasp the idea that dancing is a form of communication. that moves and movement should be shared. if you see an awesome dancer next time at a party - don't be afraid to approach them and ask them to pass some knowledge on to you. we're all in this together and it's the only sure way to keep the fever alive. all good dancers have a certain love to share their moves. because it takes time to master what we do and the ability to successfully pass heavy duty information/energy to a total stranger without words through dance is one that commands a great deal of respect. you may argue that sharing your moves with others will lead to clones...but I've learned this in my study of liquid: we all borrow moves from each other and we add our own style to them - thereby making them our own - but you will not have mastered the move until you have passed it on as it was passed to you. once you know how to pass on a move. that move is truly yours forever. VIBE KILLERS (INSECURITY) the number one enemy to ravers is being smuggled in to parties by a majority of kids... [Kyle B. (D.U.B, PLUR Prod.] "…You are more likely to see an insecure dancer trying too hard to be in the spotlight, looking over their shoulder to see if others are looking, jumping in the middle of a circle without watching others and waiting to participate, stuck in the same loop of dance without progress as they bounce up and down and up and down, these traits are still prevalent because of a new mentality that litters a once pristine landscape…" it's insecurity that keeps us from uniting together to recreate the vibe. it's insecurity that pushes the promoters to do it for the money instead of the love. it's insecurity that turns that kid into a wanna-be thug instead of that person who is essential in creating the vibe. [ Mookie (D.U.B) ]"…I voiced my opinion about not letting the younger heads get ahead of them selves, to take them under your wings and show them the deal for real, a lot of people shouted me down, And now 2-3 years later you can't even go to a party and enjoy it, All of the Good promoters throwing the parties for anything other than just the Money have quit, the door monkeys would just as soon ROB you as frisk you, and everyone else is ether two fucked up to care, or not fucked up enough, if not already poisoned and over heating. eg. Translucent throws a party and only 100 heads show up. because everyone else would rather pay the 65 dollars to go to a beat MEga-Rave, where 3 of the head-liners had no Idea they were even booked in NYC. Where bouncers were practically fingering my friend looking for drugs and then gang beatdown and robbed her boyfriend when he tried to do something about it. 4 kids were hospitalized for taking that fake Ecstasy shit, one died. and what's really fucked up is its like this every other weekend. I sometimes don't blame parents for being hysterical and paranoid. I don't understand when it became old fashioned to expect people to treat you like a person when you stand in line for how ever long to get into their venue. I don't understand, when did courtesy become last year's fad? I don't get it. Why wanting to be treated like a human being instead of cattle is looked at as old-fashioned. Its not easy for me to look at something that I once thought beautiful and watch as people pick at the boils of its rotting corpse. I'm not that old, I still like having a good time regardless of the Rheumatism, arthritis and even the Alzheimers. But it's just not easy..." as a nyc-area raver today, we definitely face the grim reality that the vibe will not be recreated in mass anytime in the near future. does that mean that we should give up hope? - not necessarily, and besides, i could not in good conscience turn my back on something that has given me so much in my life. does not giving up hope mean that we are agreeing to continue to fight an unfair and loosing battle - you bet your ass we are. but as a dancer, as a raver who still believes that this is more than just music, this is more than just dancing, and that parties can be more than just a party - i ask that you not let this onslaught of insecurity get you down. to call upon the troopah inside you and not let it suck you into its game by hiding your beauty and getting caught up with attitude wars. the game is stacked against us nowdays. yes - it isn't easy to pass a vibe to someone who does not yet understand. but we can change that - one circle at a time. [ SPROUT (U.R.C.) ] "…a party (in my opinion) is about letting go, letting loose and losing fears and inhibitions. TRUST....trust that the kid that is going berserk isn't looking to show you up, or in your face because he/she wants to battle…" and for the newcomers: the vibe is still out there. Keep Searching. it will find you if you want it to. [ these words belong to everyone who once believed ] "....There's always someone somewhere, brick by brick we build this wall, Cherish the music and live for the vibe because united we stand divided we fall. Peace, Love, Unity, Respect, don't forget to keep it real Bring your beauty everywhere its the one thing they can't steal...." - keep spreadin the fever - -10011....-.-...an anonymous drumcode....-.01.0011...- " |
