Melatonin is a natural hormone made by the pineal gland which is in the
brain. Astonishingly, as of this writing (8/95) it is available in the US
as an over-the-counter nutritional supplement. It is a very interesting
substance that may have a role in cancer treatment, but that role is far
from certain at this time. It is not entirely clear that it is safe for
all cancer patients. I am making posting this search so that you can look
at some of the evidence regarding this substance; my posting of this
search absolutely does not consititute a recommendation that any cancer
patient use melatonin. A number of popular books have recently been
published on melatonin. Of these, I think the best is: "Melatonin: Your
Body's Natural Wonder Drug" by Russel Reiter, Ph.D and Jo Robinson.
Written by an expert, it is both well documented and very readable. There
is considerable information on both melatonin's effects on both cancer and
the immune system.
